DESCRIPTION: Length 8 to 11.5mm. Known as the Birch Shieldbug this smart creature is recognised by the general green and bronzed appearance, the stocky shape, rounded pronotum extensions that lack red tips, the dark red-brown and black markings on the corium and the orange patch on the scutellum. BEHAVIOUR: Overwinters as an adult. Larvae feed on Birch, but may also use Hazel and Aspen as an alternative. Can be attracted to light. DISTRIBUTION: A common species throughout Britain and Ireland. HABITAT: Gardens, woodland rides, parks and anywhere where foodplant is found. PERIOD: Can be seen all year but best searched for between spring and summer. |
